Wonder Why My Boss Worked So Hard?

Sometimes I wonder why my boss worked so hard. Was it for money? Was it for higher position? Or was it for recognition?
My boss spent so much time away from home travelling on business trips, on Blackberry most of the time replying emails even before reaching office, was so demanding and expected nothing but the best, and along the way it is normal for her to engage in debates and arguments to defend what is right for her and her team.
After so many years of giving her full commitment, working hard and contributing to the growth of the organization, the management recently told her that the department where she has been working and spending most of her working career, can no longer offer her any more position. Feeling disappointed and frustration, she decided to move on and leave the organization.
So here I am thinking why? The answers are simple:
Firstly, in a corporate world, delivering the work is a given; however, the main challenges are the need to be on our toes and watching our back at all times because of office politics, back-stabbing, and the need to always please those at the top. These are common expectations in corporate world.
Secondly, there is no such thing as job security, loyalty and compassion in an organization. The expectation is for employee to work and deliver expected results and that in turn are rewarded through payment of salary.
Thirdly, it does not matter how much a person may have contributed in the past. Although a person may have performed well in the past, it does not mean that they would continue to get the same recognition in the future as they would only be judged for their recent performance and relationship.
Therefore, my conclusion is simple: work responsibly as an employee because we are paid to do the work. Expect no more and no less but most importantly, we work in an organization not for the organization but for ourselves. Hence, while we are gainfully employed in an organization, we must always have a backup plan and should work towards equipping ourselves with the skills that will lead us to financial independence.
Always bear this question in mind: Am I ready if I lose my job today?
